| Barugh Green Primary School was invited to take up Beacon School status in May 1998,
following a very successful OFSTED Report the previous year. The
initiative did not begin until September 1999. School concentrates on 4
strands which are:Support through consultations with Headteachers, Acting Headteachers and
Deputy Headteachers.
-
Work with Newly Qualified teachers taking the form of seminars, workshops
and classroom observations. Areas where instruction is given include:
observation of literacy and numeracy sessions, overviews of the NNS,
classroom organisation, display, identifying children with SEN, building
parent relationships, physical science and investigations, planning a school
trip, the more able child, improving children's creativity using drama and
music, circle time, role of the governing body, marking children's work,
guided reading and the role of the curriculum co-ordinator.
-
Partnership with Bretton
TTA. This involves giving lectures at
Bretton College to undergraduates. Additionally groups of students
visit school to observe lessons and then receive feedback and further
instruction.
-
Partnership with other schools. Currently we are hosting a 'Gifted
and talented' pupils group and a Pyramid Writing initiative.
Funding has allowed a 'Beacon Room' to be created with 14 conference chairs,
tables and other facilities including multi-media presentations and
displays. It also allows payment to be made to schools to cover supply
costs for any teachers attending a Beacon course or workshop. Although
this scheme finished in August 2005:
- The school continues to run NQT course for the
LEA
- We are now part of the Sustaining Success
Programme.
- The Head acts as a consultant to other schools
in Barnsley under the Primary Lead Programme.
