Attendance and Punctuality

If our students are to get the most out of school and be prepared adequately for life after they leave, they must get into the habit of attending regularly and arriving punctually. Please see that your child leaves home in time to arrive at school by 8:45 am and 1:00 pm if you provide lunch at home. Genuine illness and exceptional circumstances are the only acceptable reasons for absence. In such cases a note explaining the absence should be sent to the Form Tutor. For a short absence (1 -2 days), this note should be brought by the student on return, but if a longer absence (3 days or more) seems likely, we would appreciate a note or a telephone call, otherwise an official form asking for an explanation will have to be sent. Failure to reply or an unsatisfactory reply must be recorded by the school as Unauthorised Absence and will lead to further investigation by the Education Welfare Officer. Under no circumstances should a student leave the school premises during session times without the permission of the relevant Head of Year or Senior Member of Staff. There are clear Health and Safety reasons for this rule.

The absence of a student who leaves school without express permission will be considered as unauthorised and a full investigation for truancy will take place. Pupils taking school lunch or who bring sandwiches should remain on the premises during the lunch period (12:20 pm - 1:05 pm.) The lunch period is properly supervised by school staff and lunchtime assistants. Any student who leaves the premises does so at their own risk and the school cannot take responsiblity for them.

Holidays in Term Time Guidance

Permission for holidays cannot be granted:

  1. At any time in Year 11
  2. In the first half term of a new academic year. i.e. from September to November
  3. For Year 9 from February half term onwards until all exams are finished in June
  4. For 6 weeks before any internal or external exam throughout the year of any year group.
  5. If the Pupil's attendance will drop below 92% if the holiday is taken.

Only in exceptional circumstances can a holiday be granted in term time. If this is due to restrictions from employers, then evidence will need to be provided.

Please note that you may be fined if you decide to take a holiday without permission.

Conduct and Behaviour

We want to maintain a happy, purposeful community where everyone can benefit from the opportunities available. It is therefore important that your child behaves with consideration and courtesy to all. Positive steps are taken to encourage co-operation and caring behaviour and to eliminate any behaviour which may cause distress to other students.

All students are expected to carry out our Kirk Balk School Code of Conduct:

To respect other people and their property.

To recognise everyone’s right to learn.

To acknowledge the authority of all staff.

To show concern for the school environment.

To behave in a manner which assures the safety of themselves and others.

Other People Matter.

We have an Anti-Bullying Policy and if we become aware of physical bullying or deliberate intimidation action will be taken to deal with it immediately.

Where necessary, parents will be contacted in order to obtain their support in eliminating unacceptable behaviour. We expect all our students to develop good working habits and self-discipline in response to the encouragement and example of their teachers. Occasionally some do not and in certain circumstances may have to be punished. Punishments include repetition of work, extra work and detention during breaks and lunchtime. We expect students to move about the school in an orderly manner, to treat the building with care, and to look after text books and materials provided. We will not tolerate disruptive behaviour in the classroom. Offenders will be withdrawn to work on their own. Highly disruptive or badly-behaved students may be placed in our Learning Support Unit or indeed excluded from school, as appropriate. We always try to be fair, reasonable and sympathetic to your child’s side of the story before giving out punishment, and therefore we would ask you to support us. Students achieve self-discipline much more quickly when home and school act together in setting clear guide-lines and standards.
