School Name Consultation

In the next two years a brand new, state of the art building will replace the existing Kirk Balk School. After the new building has been put up on the current playing field, the existing school will be knocked down and be turned into a new playing field. A great deal of work has already been done to create new and better facilities which will serve the people of all ages in this community for the next 25 years.

If you want to know more about the new building, what it will be like and the consequences for Kirk Balk School, watch the meeting of the school council which you will find on:-

But this is not just about a new and better building. In line with Barnsley’s vision of Remaking Learning, there will be major changes in teaching and learning in the future. As well, it is intended that in time it will be open 48 weeks of the year, from 6.00 am to 10.00 pm, and will cater not just for school age students but for all ages. The KBS of the future will be very different from the school that we know today.

Because of that, the school’s governors are considering whether to change the name of Kirk Balk School when the new building opens and they would welcome the views of students, parents, staff and the wider community about this.

It may be a good idea to change the name because of the huge change that will happen. A new name could make the change clear to everyone. Keeping the current name may mean that people assume that nothing much is different – that we will be doing the same old things but in a shiny new building. Also, the name Kirk Balk probably does not mean much to people outside the local community.

On the other hand, it may not be a good idea to change the name. Kirk Balk has established a very good reputation locally (and wider). Schools sometimes change their names because they want to forget their reputation, but we might want to be sure that our reputation goes with us. Also, Kirk Balk is probably the only school anywhere with that particular name.

The school name in two parts – Kirk Balk and School. Either part could be changed – or both. We could change Kirk Balk to Hoyland or some other local name, or the name of a person, or something completely different. Instead of being called a school, we could change to being something else, perhaps a technology or community college, or some other description.

If you have views about any of this the governors would like to hear from you.
